The first volume has a frontispiece illustration by A Carse, and the second a portrait of William Dodd by James Hopwood. 2 separate volumes bound as one, the first being printed by G Mill…ar in Dunbar, and the second by Mundell & Son of Edinburgh. The first is an early provincial printing - Power's Checklist gives 1812 as the first printing in Dunbar. Bound in full leather with worn gilt decoration to spine, hinges cracked but firm with wear to corners and head and foot of spine. Early ownership signature on first free endpaper of William White. William Dodd (29 May 1729 - 27 June 1777) was an English Anglican clergyman and a man of letters. He lived extravagantly, and was nicknamed the "Macaroni Parson". He dabbled in forgery in an effort to clear his debts, was caught, convicted, and, despite a public campaign for a Royal pardon, became the last person to be hanged at Tyburn for forgery. " He descended so low as to become the editor of a newspaper" (DNB).

Boards have a brown paper covering with large-scale dark marbeling, paper missing on 60% of the f…ront cover and some missing on the rear cover. Cover corners are rounded as are the pages. Contents are complete, including endpapers. Edges are a light tan color, and pages are a variable lighter color, with some spots of darker foxing. Page binding has been shaken, and page 23-24 is loose at the top, else pages are secure and pages are all plainly legible. Owner's signature appears three times, dated 1801.

In a contemporary quarter calf binding with marbled boards. Bound with the original endpapers. Reflections on Death, first published in 1763, is the lesser known work of Anglican clergyman and man of letters William Dodd, written over a decade prior to his demise. It is typically found bound with his Thoughts in Prison, a more popular title written during his time at Newgate Prison. Dodd dabbled in forgery in an effort to clear his debts, but was ultimately caught, convicted and hanged at Tyburn in 1777. In a contemporary quarter calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, rubbed quite notably to the boards and to the spine label, with bumping to the spine head and tail. Small losses to the board corners. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with occasional light spots. Contemporary ownership inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1794. Good. None (illustrator). book.
