Prior owner name on side of front cover. Jacket has clean and bright cover with small wear at corner tips and wear at head of spine, not effecting the lettering. Dust jacket shows original price of 50 cents at head of front flap. Rear dust jacket flap lists only to itself in this series. This is the earlier format (without cover banner; cover banner on dust jacket is a later format).

Bound in blue cloth with titles and rules stamped in black. This is the so-called "Banner edition", issued somewhere between 1948 and 1954, which consisted of three of Snell's earlier books, volumes 17, 19 and 21. All have the yellow banner on the front panel of the dust wrapper ("Teen-Age Mystery Story"). The proof that this is a reprint edition is found on the rear flap, which blurbs title 21, a book which would originally be published two years after this book (1938; see full jacket photo). Volume 17 blurbs this book on the rear flap, and volume 21 has a blurb for number 17. No other titles are mentioned, indicating this was the extent of this reprint series. The price is $1.25, far more than the $.50 that the original editions were priced at. (Volume 21 originally appeared in a larger format, which was priced at $.75). The front panel illustration is different from the original also, in an attempt to get potential buyers to believe this (and the other two) were new stories. The paper quality is quite good and the binding is solid, although the paper bulks nearly 1/2" less than the original. All in all, this small reprint series seems to have been a last-ditch attempt to get Snell's books back before the public, an attempt that failed, as only these three books appeared in this format. This copy shows only a hint of rubbing at the head and heel of the spine. There is a March 19, 1954 gift inscription to the ffe; the book is otherwise unmarked. The hinges are solid and binding is square. The dust jacket has rather heavy edgewear, with creasing and chipping along the lower edge of the front panel. It was placed in mylar after the photos were taken. Note: Many sellers believe this is the first edition. An easy way to distinguish the difference at a glance is the illustration. This G+ quality and likely first edition book was copyrighted in 1936 and published by the Reilly & Lee Company; it is 7-5/8" tall with 254 numbered pages of text. It is a format #2, as per Mattson & Davis. This book--with medium blue cloth binding and black lettering--is square, very clean, free of corner bumps with a ding on the top edge of the front panel; the head and heel of the spine are also bumped, with slight discoloration and wear. The bottom edges have a mild amount of wear. The spine is not faded and is clean and the lettering is intact and not damaged. The lettering on the front panel is completely intact and not damaged. A very noticeable flaw of this book is fading of the binding--the bottom 1/8" and the top 5/8" of the front panel and lesser amounts on the spine and rear panel are so affected (see photos). The interior is completely free of writing, stray marks, stains of any sort and page damage of any type. The text paper is moderately toned except around the edges, which are heavily toned; however, the pages are still very flexible and not brittle. There are no illustrations. The front hinge is strong and not damaged in any way; paper covering the rear hinge has torn and the entire length of the cheese cloth is exposed--the hinge is weak but holding. The book has no remainder mark and is not a former library book. There is no series list in the book. The VG- jacket is in one piece and is very slightly soiled--based on the orangish colors,I assume that the spine and the front panel are faded. It has tiny chips at all four corners and small chips with folds at the head and heel of the spine--no lettering is affected by these chips. There is a 1" tear at the top of the rear panel near the rear fold and a 1/2" tear with folds on the bottom edge of the front panel. The rear flap lists through this title in this series.
