Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First British Edition of the American Yale imprint. Oxford University Press, Humphrey Milford, London 1936. Gr.-8°. With 14 plates on art paper and 16 text figures. vii, 1 Bl., 210 S. Publisher s blue cloth binding with gilt spine and original dust jacket. Copy from the library "The Theosophical Society Shanghai, China" [Shanghai Lodge]. Scarce first edition in book form of these lectures by the foremost observational astronomer of the 20th century, illustrated with 15 photographic plates, including frontispiece, and numerous in-text charts and diagrams. Hubble s scientific achievements made him the foremost observational astronomer of the 20th century and one of the most influential scientists of all time in changing our understanding of the universe The rapidly increasing number of nebulae observed and the estimated 150,000 within reach of existing instruments emphasized the need for a classification scheme Hubble s classification scheme was announced in the 1920s, contemporaneously with his demonstration that the nebulae are galaxies, and his diagram of the sequence of nebular types became famous in the 1930s Recognition of Hubble s achievements and stature included invitations to present prestigious lectures [among them] the Silliman Lectures at Yale in 1935, published as The Realm of the Nebulae More popular indices of Hubble s fame are the appearance of his face on the cover of Time magazine in 1948 and the attachment of his name to the space telescope in 1990 Hubble s cosmology should be appreciated for the assumptions it overthrew, for the vistas it opened and as one of the great accomplishments of the human intellect (ANB). Among his other achievements, Hubble proved that the universe is not static he changed no less a mind than Albert Einstein s on the subject thus verifying what has become known as the Big Bang theory. See Simmons, Scientific 100 30. Cover binding slightly rubbed, bumped and stained. Endpapers slightly shaded with glue. Front endpaper and title page with small discreet Chinese stamp, otherwise a very good copy. Very uncommon in the dustwrapper.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS: I can email more photos of the binding, upon request. First Edition. SIGNED BY EDWIN HUBBLE: "To James R. Allen/ from/ Edwin Hubble". Silliman Lectures. "No modern astronomer made a more profound contribution to our understanding of the cosmos than did Edwin Hubble, who first conclusively demonstrated that the universe is expanding. Basing his theory on the observation of the change in spectra of distant galaxies, called red shift, Hubble showed that this is a Doppler effect, or alteration in the wavelength of light, resulting from the rapid motion of celestial objects away from Earth. Hubble's discovery confirmed an equation previously arrived at by Einstein--who, however, had not trusted his own figures until Hubble proved their accuracy. Hubble supported his theory with careful measurements, but found a rate of expansion (called Hubble's constant) that was far too high because he assumed that other galaxies were much nearer our Milky Way than they are. On the other hand, Hubble's law, relating the distance of a galaxy to its recession velocity, remains essentially unchanged. In 1935 Hubble described his principal observations and conclusions in the Silliman lectures at Yale University. These lectures were published the following year as The Realm of the Nebulae, which quickly became a classic work.". Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Yale University Press. New Haven. 1937. 210 pages. First Edition, second printing stated, March 1937. Book is about fine. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Blue cloth stamped in gilt on spine. Panels are bright and clean, gilt stamping is bright and unmarred. Endpapers are bright and clean with slight toning in front gutter.Previous owner's name neatly written on corner of front endpaper. Original super-rare DJ with $3.00 price intact on flap. DJ shows minimal soiling, shallow edge chips and light sunning to spine. DJ flaws hardly of consequence considering the scarcity of the DJ itself. Book is nearly fine in a VG DJ. As for the author, Hubble proved that many objects previously thought to be clouds of dust and gas, which was classified as "nebulae" were actually galaxies beyond the Milky Way. Additionally, Hubble provided evidence that the recessional velocity of a galaxy increases with its distance from the Earth, a property now known as "Hubble's law." Prior to Hubble's death, the Nobel Prize in Physics was not awarded to/for advancement in the field of Astrophysics; a technicality that has since changed. Sadly the award is not awarded posthumously otherwise Edwin Hubble would be a Nobel laureate. Credited with making extragalactic astronomy and observational cosmology actual fields of study, the Hubble Space Telescope was named in his honor. The Realm of the Nebulae remains Hubble's magnum opus. Vintage copies are uncommon, vintage copies in original DJs are flat-out rare. A plum for any serious collector. Near fine/VG.
