Spine ends similarly worn and spine itself strongly scuffed and split. Board surfaces scratched and rubbed.

More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Pen inscriptions to pastedowns and free endpapers. Hinges are moderately cracked and stained but binding remains firm. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild rubbing, tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with soft crushing to ends.

The pages are un-numbered. Binder's black cloth, signed in manuscript by J. N. WALLAS, BINDER, WIGTON, 1875, on the front paste-down, lacking leaves A1 and A2, the remainder foxed, dusty and grubby in the margins, with scattered ink blots, a typically used copy, but of particular interest for the binder's ms. ascription. *The first leaf of each gathering has the statement - 'Crosbys correct edit' - in the lower margin. The printer's imprint is on the final leaf. These facts give the clue to the title of this work - a copy may be seen on COPAC, held in the British Library.

12mo (158 x 89mm.), [236]p. slightly browned throughout and with some slight staining to the head or tail of some leaves, occasional ink marginalia. Contemporary marbled calf, rubbed, the front joint split and the rear rubbed, mull repair at the gutter of the front flyleaf verso. Signature of John Jackson dated 1806 on the pastedown together with contemporary arithmetical calculations on the front and rear endleaves. A nice, provincially printed edition of a ready-reckoner which ran through many editions in a long publishing history. Sometimes this work is catalogued under Fenning, while other catalogues place it under Leybourne, who died in 1716 - a further clue, if needed, as to its long-standing esteem. Editions were published in North America in the second half of the 18th century and it was still going strong well into the 19th. Crosby was the headmaster of the York Charity School, edited the York edition of Walkingame's Tutor's Assistant and wrote the key to `that excellent Publication.'.

Condition: Good Plus. Small narrow 8vo., original sheepskin. Well used with ownership signatures on both pastedowns and endpapers. Preliminary endpaper missing. This copy belonged to Jacob Bigler and family. Tables in shillings and pences. Scarce in that the boards are still integral, usual foxing. Many pages bent at corners from use. These "ready reckoners" were well used and always contain notations and mathematical calculations. All things considered, this is a very presentable copy of an early Philadelphia imprint used in the early American states.
