First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 170 pages. Published in 1978. Rare High Times Magazine, Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, and Peter Beard collectible item. A near-fine copy of the legendary and enduring magazine's December 1978 Double Holiday Issue. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited one-time-only print run as a softcover magazine only. There is no ISBN. The Magazine Issue is now very rare. Presents High Times Magazine's Holiday Double Issue. Features Truman Capote (as older stand-in for kids) and Andy Warhol (as Santa Claus) on the Cover and a lovely Special Feature within. The latter is "A Christmas Carol", with lyrics by Truman Capote and original design by Andy Warhol. Capote insists he does not want anything for himself for Christmas. But he has a very long Wish List for personalities, celebrities, and nemeses for Santa, notably a sex-change operation of Jacqueline Kennedy and an ambassadorship for Gore Vidal to Paraguay, where Capote hopes he stays forever. This marks not only their very first - and only - appearance in High Times Magazine, but their very first - and only - Magazine Cover Appearance together anywhere. The Issue also has a rare, fascinating, and illuminating Interview with Peter Beard, the late great photographer/artist/writer/bohemian/pioneering environmentalist, then largely unknown to the American public, but one of the living heroes of High Times Magazine, the enduring advocacy magazine by "High Society". High, that is, on marijuana, whose acceptance has finally come in our time. An absolute "must-have" title for High Times Magazine, Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, and Peter Beard collectors. This title is a great Issue. It is very prominently and beautifully facsimile-signed (pre-printed) on their Contribution by Truman Capote and Andy Warhol, something they have never done before. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the High Times Magazine Holiday Double Issue available online and despite its imperfection (very slight wear on the cover, but it's there) is still in fine condition overall: Well-preserved, clean, crisp, and bright. It is the single most beautiful copy we have ever seen. Now protected in its own plastic sheet for posterity. A rare copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with photographic plates. A fine copy.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 224 pages. Published in 1985. Retrospective collection of black-and-white photographs, with accompanying text. Andy Warhol's finest achievement as a photographer and reporter. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original. Most copies were printed as paperbacks only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Andy Warhol and Barbara Richer: Oversize-volume format. Cream cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Andy Warhol. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with white titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Andy Warhol's "America". His response to (and implicit rejection of) Robert Frank's "The Americans" (1959). A celebrity-obsessed "take" on the very same America that Robert Frank traversed before him, and found sad and wanting, this is a Warholian celebration in response to Frank's elegy. Like Frank, Warhol travelled the length and breadth of continental USA. His running commentary reflects the "start-stop" journey in gossipy prose. No one considers Andy to be a great writer because he isn't. But no one can deny that his writing is inimitably his alone. That's why Penguin reissued the book as a Modern Classic. "The thing is, if you're a celebrity yourself, everybody expects you to know all the great people, and you don't want to let them down. I've met 80% of the people you'd think I've met, and the other 20%, I'm dying to meet" (Andy Warhol). Warhol was an anomaly of American entertainment/celebrity culture: He was a diehard fan of celebrities who was (as he himself admits) a celebrity. His fans were, by the same token, many of the same celebrities. As this collection shows, his very first act when he met a celebrity was not to shake his or her hand, but, always camera-ready, to take a photograph. So the 80% are all here. An absolute "must-have" title for Andy Warhol collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the DJ Front Cover by Andy Warhol. It is signed directly on the cover itself, not on a tipped-in page. It is very boldly and beautifully signed again on Page 19 in black pen-marker by the artist. This title is a late-modern photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such double-signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: 99.9% of "signed" Warhols passed off online - especially eBay - are fakes. The discerning collector's eye will know right away an authentic Andy Warhol signature when they see it. This is the inimitable Real Thing. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. One of the most beautiful photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Hatje Cantz: Oversize-volume format. White cloth boards with red titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Steve Schapiro. Text by Mathias Harder. The subjects are THE Who's Who of 20th century performing and visual arts. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ, which features, in a photographic coup, David Bowie on the cover, and red gilt titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Steve Schapiro's "Then And Now". A triumphant achievement. "The photographer behind countless now-classic portraits of rock stars, film stars, and politicians from the 1960's and 1970's, Schapiro has worked as a film set photographer on more than 200 Hollywood movies; designed several iconic film posters, notably 'Midnight Cowboy', 'Taxi Driver', and 'The Godfather'; and as documentary photographer, recorded the political tumult of the 1960's and 1970's, in photo-essays on drug addiction, the Civil Rights Movement, and Presidential campaigns. Looks back at Schapiro's half-century career, reproducing famous images alongside new and unseen work. Includes portraits of the stars as never-before-seen" (Publisher's blurb). They include indelible portraits of iconic figures such as: Woody Allen, David Bowie, Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp, Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola, Jodie Foster, Aretha Franklin, Dustin Hoffmann, John Huston, Michael Jackson, Sophia Loren, Rene Magritte, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Jack Nicholson, (the very elusive) Roman Polanski, Otto Preminger, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Redford, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Andy Warhol, Orson Welles, and Frank Zappa, among others. Genuine celebrity is not just captured, it is certified for posterity, by Schapiro's camera. An absolute "must-have" title for Steve Schapiro collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in red pen-marker on the title page by the photographer: "A great friend with a great eye. Stay inspired! Best, Steve". It is followed by his signature at the bottom of the page: "Steve Schapiro". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The red pen beautifully matches the book's red titles. The recipient, Paul Berlanga, who is named, is a Chicago-based photography expert and important artist-painter, who helped Steve Schapiro design and produce his books. This title is a late-modern photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white plates. One of the finest American photographers of our time. A fine copy.
