This work is a "revised edition, with additional material" of Batten's 1881 Reminiscences of Two Years in the United States Navy. Of the first edition, Nevins writes, "Batten was a surgeon on the gunboat Vallet City in North Carolina waters from April, 864, to the end of the war." Nevins I, p. 218.
