Uncommon First edition 1897 hardcover offering in moderately soiled cream cloth covered boards with brown title and drawing of a jockey on racehorse being led from the paddock as onlookers gaze including a local 'Bobby' in the foreground. Book corners and spine ends rubbed w/loss of cloth. Gilt spine title dull, vertical crease on spine cloth. Solid black endpapers with two good hinges and vintage bookstore sticker at foot of fep. No names or tears seen in the tight 344pp text which is browned but not brittle and has some heavily foxed pages scattered throughout. Spine crack at page 144 but no loose leaves. Tissue-guarded frontispiece and 15 other full page b/w plates plus 36 line drawings within the text by a fine group of sporting artists. See pix or ask for them. A compilation work by Watson made up of some stories previously published in his first two works:'Sketches in the Hunting Field' and "Race Course and Covert Side' along with stories published in the 'Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News' during the years he was editor there.

The book is Very Good with straight spine, sharp corners and firm but rubbed spine ends. The binding is tight with heavily toned page edges and overall clean text block with foxing present occasionally, which does not affect legibility. The front end papers are toned with a book plate for the Wallasey Central Conservative Club glued to the inside board. The book has 419 pages including index and is illustrated throughout in black and white with a colour frontispiece. The title page confirms the SECOND EDITION and year published as 1887. Wonderfully, a orevious owner has laid in a cutting from The Times newspaper dated January 6th 1890, which includes an article of "The Rules of Racing and the Stud Book".

In the Badminton Library series, a sporting project aiming to cover all major sports and pastimes, edited by Henry Somerset.The racing part was written by the Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire and W G Craven, while the steeple-chasing part was written by Arthur Coventry and Alfred E T Watson. Decoraative cloth boards with gitl embossed authors names and vignette of a horses head to the spine. There is a prize presentation bookplate to the front paste down from Wellingboro' Lawn Tennis Tournament, August 5th, 1889 - Gentlemen's Singles Handicap First Prize, Basil L. Thompson. Numerous sketches throughout illustrate the text and a colour frontispiece plate as called for. There are bumps to the head and tail of the spine and three board corners are a little turned in. Slight splitting to the front and rear inner hinges - the boards are firm and tight. Some foxing to the upper fore edges and the rear blank page. There is a short tear of 1 cm to the head of the title page, now expertly repaired and a slight chip adjacent to the tear. Clean and tight. A very good well preserved, bright tight copy.
