Franklin's lavish leather binding of the Signed, Limited Edition of the two-time Pulitzer Prize winning Updike's 1960 first entry in the famed series of novels about the too-gray life of Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, who had the misfortune of running into what we pretty much all do: ordinary life. Artist Jerry Pinkney got the mood, and his illustrations herein reflect it. Flame Red top grain Kamenna Cowhide binding, gilt decorated and imprinted, spine panels rib divided, All Edges Gilt, moire endpapers of a truly beautiful Old Copper color, and a matching Old Copper satin page-marker ribbon. The gilt is 22 karat; the paper is 65-pound Old Style White Wove (first developed in 1932, when Updike was born); text set in 11-point Times Roman type. The Franklin Library, doing what they did best. As New; pristine and flawless, and protectively archived since arrival; page-marker has in fact never been moved. With Updike's "A Special Message to Subscribers from John Updike" prefacing the novel, and the seldom-retained "Notes from the Editors" which arrived with original shipments of the piece. All four volumes are SIGNED by Updike, though "Rabbit, Run" is signed on a laid-in bookplate. "Rabbit, Run" has a few minor stains to the top edge and very mild edge…-fading, but the dust jacket is nicer than usually found, with just a hint of creasing at the crown, and only the slightest fading to the spine; much less than usual, and scarce thus. That volume and "Rabbit Redux" are price-clipped. All three of the other volumes are fine in fine dust jackets. A very handsome signed set, which makes a stately centerpiece for any Updike or more general modern literature collection.

The dust wrapper, brightly designed by Kenneth Breese, is mostly clean, but with tears to the top and tail edges and handling marks throughout. It has not been price clipped and shows the original 16s net price. The boards are fr…ee from notable chips and marks and the text blocks are bright and white; the front board, however, is very slightly marked. The internals are bright, clean and free from foxing. SIGNED on the front endpaper by John Updike to his children's nanny: 'To Sally/with regards/John U./ This copy is free from previous owners ink and is, overall, in very good condition and rare signed The author's second novel, and fourth publication, following 'The Poorhouse Fair', 'The Carpentered Hen' and 'The Same Door', not in that order. 'Rabbit, Run', describes what happens when Rabbit bolts.
