Condition: Poor. In original dark red hardback halfbound leather binding, Cover torn along the length of the backstrip, but only just still intact by a small amount of binding at the top. Backstrip and covers very scuffed, with some of the leather torn off from the corners of the covers. Binding split in the middle of the book, but the two halves are still attached. Pageblock in poor condition, with a liquid stain extending from the bottom to halfway up on the majority of pages. Full blue/black leather binding with gilt coat of arms to front cover. Gilt decoration around front & rear cover edges on both outer & inner surfaces. Five raised bands to spine with gilt decoration and titles. Marbled end papers and teg. The author was librarian to Queen Victoria and this is presented as an accurate account of her childhood and youth. Many illustrations & colour frontispiece. Textblock tight. Lacks both boards and spine, and the colour frontispiece. 200pp. Includes the 39 original engravings, about 24 are full-plate, the rest some halfsize and some small; condition most vg regarding the plate, margins varying from lightly foxed to watermarked; only the last 3 full-page plates are watermarked down the inner margin and partway into the engraving. Overall most pages are tanned and there is watermarking from the back affecting the upper corner and part of the upper margin. the front several pages are chipped at upper fore-edge, and there are a few small tears/holes in the back and second-back pages, but these are supplemental pages (Contents and List of Illustrations) and not part of the text. A biography of Queen Victoria written by the Royal Librarian, (to celebrate the 60th anniversary of her accession), and illustrated with artwork from Windsor Castle. Weight 1.7 kg before packaging.
