Ths is a biography in the true sense of the term, illuminating Pushkin's character and his travails while enmeshed in the Russian political system. Pushkin's character reminds me of how Nina Berberova described Marina Tsvetaeva as travelling a chaotic path to an early death. Magarshack at the same time creates a vivid picture of how the tsarist regime implacably wrapped its tentacles around the struggling genius. One cannot really tell, of course, whether his life might have taken a different course under a more enlightened regime. The last chapter, on the duel and funeral, was quite dramatic. Magarshack was an excellent translator with an sensitive feeling for good English. Many excerpts from the letters are quoted to great effect---the epistolary literature of the time was brilliant. The two pages of bibliography show that Magarshack did his homework, and there is an index. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 320 pages.
