Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Kiyonaga (illustrator). 1st Edition. Very good with tear along spine of only the first leaf of the three-leaf folded cover and light browning to front cover. Light, narrow area of dampstain along bottom edge of inside front cover and small area of top corner at spine of first three leaves as well as along bottom edge and small area of upper right-hand corner of back cover. Slight foxing to inside front cover and foredge and bottom edge of leaves. Duodecimo, 4-page introduction in English, and 20 (i.e. 40) double leaves, folded once in Japanese style. They are comprised of 20 progressive plates, numbered 1-20, printed from wood blocks with captions in English and Japanese. Letterpress tail-piece. Bount in traditional oriental format, tied with red silken threads, front cover has hand-printed woodblock "Ferry over the Sumida" in full color from 20 blocks. A lovely book, beautifully preserved. Through 20 progressive color spreads, each showing separately the added color and the result on the print spreads, each showing separately the added color and the result on the print itself. Thus, the book creates, step by step, a full-color reproduction, made from 20 different blocks, reproducing Kiyonaga's "Ferry over the Sumida". Quite rare. Museum quality.

Card. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Second Edition. Coloured, pictorial card integral wraps. Bound in two places with red silk. 46 pages:four in English explaining the origin and method of the process; two pages of the same in Japanese; then in twenty pairs of facing pages (double leaves, single-folded0 the wood-cut is built-up, e.g. the first colour and the resulting print from the first block, then the second colour and the resulting overprint from the from the second block, etc. The example wood-cut print used in the book and on the front is apparently "Ferry over the Sumida" by Kiyonaga. A price 3 Yen sticker on inside bottom corner of back wrap. Minor faults: slight tanning and slight grubiness to wraps; a very light 0.5 inch stain to top corner of blank page 7; a small tear of 0.33 inch to the bottom edge of page 9' the folded page making up wood-cut stage 11 has been detached at the gully and so could be opened out to show the blank obverse; the back wrap has some v. shallow indentations where someone has used the book as a rest when writing on something else. First published in 1916, THIS book is 1920 (a second edition) Type llla is the nearest variation: it has(no date at the end of the English intro.; it has two pages of Japanese intro. following the English one, making the book 46 pages long; the title on the front is enclosed in a box; "The Shimbi Shoin, Ltd." appears just below the coloured print on the front cover. It measure 17.4cm x 12.cm, v. slightly less than some Type llla, and the spine width is 0.9 cm. It varies at the 6th and 9th colour printing stages from Type 1 although by the end it has got back on track. There is no text printing on the page following the last wood-cut. This edition seems to be a slight variation of Type llla. Tight and genrally clean. Obviously the final wood-cut print in the book is crisper than that on the fnt.
