First Edition
Paperback. Condition: Good. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. A scarce pamphlet by Wal Hannington on areas of mass unemployment in the UK, before the publication of his book of the same name. The first edition of this work in pamphlet form in the publisher's original paper wraps. Walter "Wal" Hannington (18961966) was a founding member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and National Organiser of the National Unemployed Workers' Movement, which published this work, from its formation in 1921 to its end in 1939. This fascinating pamphlet explores 'distressed', 'depressed' or 'derelict' areas of the UK in which there was mass unemployment during the 1930s, such as West Cumberland, Durham, Northumberland, Glamorgan, Pembroke and Monmouthshire, Dumbarton, Lanarkshire, Stirling, Midlothian, and others. Hannington argues that the British Government is not supporting these areas as it should, with shocking statistics to outline his case. Hannington later expanded on the topic in his book of the same name, published by Victor Gollancz with a preface by Professor Harold Laski.Undated, dated through copies held at the University of Cambridge Libraries. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally generally smart, though insect damage has created holes to the lower extremities of the pamphlet, which is more significant to the front of the wraps. However, the text is not affected and the pamphlet remains intact. The odd spot to the wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Good. book.
