Add to basketpaperback. Condition: Good. Univ of California Press [Published Date: 1978]. Soft cover, 263 pages, 50 unnumbered pages of plates, black and white illustrations. First paperback printing, (with full number line). In good+ condition. Glossy tan illustrated paper covers have light bumping and creasing to edges and corners and light overall scuffing and soiling. Light fading to spine. Binding tight. Pages lightly aged but otherwise unmarked. Black and white illustrations. [From Introduction] This book deals with the development of the relief printing press from its inception in the middle of the fifteenth century until approximately 1940, when it may be said to have reached its zenith. I occasionally mention developments after that date, but the five hundred years happily make a neat and convenient period to cover. During the world war of 1939 - 45 and for some ten years thereafter there was little new in printing-press manufacturing technique, but during the next decade the seeds were sown for completely new approaches which will, no doubt, come to fruition in the last quarter of this century. I have resisted the temptation to prophesy at any length about these changes, firstly because it is impossible to be specific, and secondly, if previous experience is anything to go by, many of the existing types of press will continue in operation for many years to come. I have also limited myself to the relief or letterpress press and machine, and have not dealt with either the lithographic or gravure processes. Much of the development in these two processes as far as the press was concerned was on the same lines as that in relief printing and (particularly with regard to lithography) the greatest changes may yet be to come. . . While there have been books published on this subject over a period of nearly three hundred years I think I may claim that this is the most comprehensive, but, even so, in order to keep the book within reasonable bounds, I have had to omit descriptions of some presses, which were made in large numbers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. . .
