Tall 8vo. xiii + [3] + 156 pp. Bound in original cloth gilt, in decorative dust wrapper which is a little chipped and worn, especially at head and tail of spine. Some browning of endpapers but otherwise a very good copy. Loosely inserted are correspondence to and from the author, including his signature, and newspaper cuttings, including reviews of this title, etc. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece, 4 collotype plates and throughout by 37 text figures, some in red and green and including facsimiles. The first part of this book was printed in the journal Signature. Oliver Simon (1895-1956) was an accomplished book designer and typographer who became director of the Curwen Press, originally established in 1863. The Press was associated with many famous artists and graphic designers of the day, including John Piper, Paul Nash and Edward Bawden. It went into receivership in 1984 but was revived again in 2011.
