Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Third Edition. Paul Adrien Maurice Diracâs The Principles of Quantum Mechanics is a seminal work in theoretical physics, first published in 1930 and later revised in multiple editions, including the third edition in 1947. This book played a crucial role in shaping modern quantum mechanics, introducing Diracâs braket notation, which became a standard mathematical framework for quantum states. The 1947 edition notably revised the chapter on quantum electrodynamics, incorporating discussions on electron-positron creation, reflecting advancements in quantum field theory. Diracâs approach emphasized mathematical elegance, presenting quantum mechanics with a logical structure that moved beyond classical physics. This work remains one of the most influential texts in quantum mechanics, setting the foundation for wave functions, operators, and quantum transformations. Original blue cloth, gilt lettered. "The 3rd edition has been rewritten with the use of the notation of bra and ket vectors. This notation allows for a more direct connexion to be made between the formalism in terms of the abstract quantities corresponding to states and observables and the formalism in terms of representatives - in fact the two formalisms become welded into a single comprehensive scheme. With the help of this notation several of the deductions in the book take a simpler and neater form." - from the preface. Dirac shared the Nobel Prize with Schrödinger in 1933 "for the discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory".

English physicist Paul Dirac (1902-1984) stands as one of the most significant theoretical physicists of the 20th century. In 1933, alongside Erwin Schrödinger, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics for pioneering new forms of atomic theory. Dirac is best known for his crucial and elegant contributions to the formulation of quantum mechanics and his quantum theory of the emission and absorption of radiation, which laid the foundation for quantum electrodynamics. Modern expositions of quantum mechanics often draw upon his masterpiece, "The Principles of Quantum Mechanics" (1930) [DSB XVII, p.224]. The second rewritten edition of the book was published in 1934, and the third edition in 1947 underwent significant revisions to incorporate various improvements. In this fourth edition, the chapter on quantum electrodynamics has been rewritten. The theory, initially conserving the number of charged particles, has been replaced by a quantum electrodynamics that includes the creation and annihilation of electron-positron pairs. A revised fourth edition was issued in 1967.

Dirac's most important contribution to "wave mechanics", the mathematical description of the atom worked out by Schroedinger. Dirac, who predicted the existence of antiparticles (i.e., the positron, discovered in 1932), shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Schroedinger for the discovery of new and fruitful forms of atomic theory. The second edition, in which "Dirac has not only revised but has largely rewritten the whole book, and has tried to give the development of the theory in a rather less abstract form without making any sacrifices in exactness of expression or in the logical character of the development. Some new subject-matter has also been inserted, the largest addition being a chapter on field theory.".

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS: I can send more photos of the binding, upon request, First Edition. SIGNED BY PAUL DIRAC "P. A. M. Dirac", on the title page. "The first complete exposition of the general formalism of quantum mechanics, presented in a logically consistent and axiomatic fashion, based on the notions of 'observables' and 'states' as primitives, was Dirac's Principles of Quantum Mechanics. The impact of the book on the generation of modern physicists is perhaps best characterized by a remark made by Lennard-Jones when the book appeared: 'An eminent European physicist, who is fortunate enough to possess a bound set of reprints of Dr. Dirac's original papers, has been heard to refer to them affectionately as his 'Bible'. Those not so fortunate have now at any rate an opportunity of acquiring a copy of the authorized version' " (Jammer, Conceptual Development of Quantum Mechanics, pp. 366-67). "The latest and most successful creation of theoretical physics, namely Quantum Mechanics, is fundamentally different in its principles from the two programmes which we will briefly call Newton's and Maxwell's. For the quantities that appear in its laws make no claim to describe Physical Reality itself, but only the probabilities for the appearance of a particular physical reality on which our attention is fixed. Dirac, to whom, in my opinion, we owe the most logically perfect presentation of this theory. . . " (Albert Einstein, "Maxwell's Influence on the Development of the Conception of Physical Reality", in James Clerk Maxwell, a Commemoration Volume, 1931, pp. 72-73). "Dirac was one of the greatest theoretical physicists in the twentieth century. He is best known for his important and elegant contributions to the formulation of quantum mechanics. . . . Present expositions of quantum mechanics largely rely on his masterpiece The Principles of Quantum Mechanics (1930)" (D.S.B. 17: 224). Paul Dirac shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933 with Erwin Schrödinger "for the discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory." The International Series of Monographs on Physics. Very fine copy. From the library of British applied mathematician Louis Melville Milne-Thomson (1891-1974), with his signature on the dust-jacket and front free endpaper, and a few annotations in the margins. First Edition of Dirac's classic treatise on quantum mechanics, containing "the first complete exposition of the general formalism of quantum mechanics, presented in a logically consistent and axiomatic fashion" (Jammer, Conceptual Development of Quantum Mechanics, p. 366). "Except for Darwin's Origin of Species, no book since Newton's Principia explained so much of so wide a realm of nature. It is difficult to think of another physics text that conveys more effectively the power of a simple, logical presentation. Probably no other book has ever given its readers a greater appreciation of the aesthetic dimension of theoretical physics" (Schweber, QED and the Men who Made It, p. 573). "Present expositions of quantum mechanics largely rely on [Dirac's] masterpiece The Principles of Quantum Mechanics" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). This very fine copy in dust-jacket is from the library of Louis Melville Milne-Thomson, author of several classic textbooks on applied mathematics such as The Calculus of Finite Differences (1933), and developer of the Milne-Thomson circle theorem and the Milne-Thomson method for finding a holomorphic function. The excellent condition of Milne-Thomson's copy of Dirac's Principles of Quantum Mechanics suggests that he did not use it in his own work, despite the presence of a few marginal notes in what is presumably his hand. .

A WORK DESERVING OF THE NOBEL PRIZE DIRAC, P[aul] A[drien] M[aurice] The principles of quantum mechanics. Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1930. 8vo. Original cloth; an excellent copy. First edition of a classic work which confirmed Dirac's stature as a 20th-century Newton. Dirac here incorporated the previous work of Heisenberg and Schrödinger on wave mechanics into a single mathematical formalism that associates measurable quantities to operators acting on the Hilbert space of vectors that describe the state of a physical system. He proposed that the theoretically possible negative energy solutions for the electron exist as states, but these states are filled with particles of negative energy. He predicted the existence of the positron and other antipartcles, and that an electron meeting a positron can give mutual annihilation, releasing energy as a photon (light). $ 6500.00.
