The Hill Collection of Voyages states: "This is an important and much valued book. Before its publication, the English had known relatively little about Peruvian society and its literary accomplishments. The text was taken from copies of El Mercurio peruano, which were captured by the English on a Spanish ship sailing from Callao. This work is the earliest and most lavish English color-plate book relating to Peru and Ecuador, the plates show natives of Lima and Quito. The appendix contains much interesting information about generations of missionaries to the west coast of South America". First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition, 4to, (270 x 220 mm), [xiv]+487 pp, 20 hand coloured plates, contemporary calf, gilt decorated spine. The editor Joseph Skinner compiled The Present State of Peru based on articles written for Mercurio Peruano, a Lima newspaper, the 20 beautiful plates were created, according to Skinner, by an untutored native . The book catered to a British audience fascinated by the geography, flora, fauna, and indigenous populations of distant lands. Abbey Travel 723. Condition: rebacked preserving original gilt decorated spine, occasional minor spotting or offsetting, corners and edges rubbed, bookplate of Lord Berwick and of Charles Crofton-Atkins. Good.
First edition; 4to (27 x 22 cm); 20 hand-coloured stipple-engraved plates, a little trimmed as usual without loss, amorial bookplate to paste-down, mottling to some gatherings, plates fine; contemporary tree calf, gilt flat spine with gilt morocco lettering piece, all edges speckled, a little rubbing to extremities, upper board joint split professionally repaired, a very good copy; xiv, 487, [1]pp. A translated abridgement of Mercurio Peruano, a biweekly newspaper published in Lima between 1791 and 1795, a clutch of which fell into the hands of the editor after the capture of the Spanish galleon St. Jago and its treasure (some £133 million in today's money) in 1795. Original authors include Jacinti Calero y Moreira, Hipà lito Unanue, Josà BaquÃjano y Carrillo and Josà Rossi y RubÃ. These young writers belonged to the Society of Lovers of the Country and subscribed to the ideas of the Enlightenment. The translation itself is uneven, but conveys the intent of the authors in their papers and gives a near contemporary account of Lima and Peru at a time when the nation was trying to discover and define its cultural identity. This remains one of the few English works with colour plates on South America. Abbey (Travel), 723; Colas 2751; Lipperheide 1629; Sabin 81615.
