First Edition
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. An uncommon copy of this religious work by Thomas Tomkinson, which breaks down the Muggletonianism perspective, in the original paper wraps. Uncommon, First Ed Thus being the first trade edition to be published by Deal. This is an interesting religious work, which provides a Muggletonian analysis of The New Testament's 'Epistle of Jude' written by Thomas Tomkinson. The Muggletonians were a small Protestant Christian movement, stemming from the late seventeenth century, when a pair of tailors claimed to be the last Biblical prophets. Opposed to the Quakers, Muggletonian beliefs included opposition to philosophical reason, scriptural understandings of the universe, and the main belief that God appeared directly on Earth as Jesus. The Muggletonians avoided church services and preaching, and only met to discuss works and socialise. They often cursed figures who 'reviled their faith', including novelist Sir Walter Scott. This is one of the most important works from the Muggletonian perspective, which gives scriptural support to Muggletonian ideas through 'darkly poetic language'. The author, Thomas Tomkinson provides evidence for their beliefs through certain lines and verses of the Epistle, pointing out important 'proof' of 'second deaths', pre-existent Christ, and 'the role of the prophet as the proper channel to expound God's will'.Thomas Tomkinson (1631-1710) was an English Muggletonian writer who became attracted to the religious movement after reading 'The Lost Sheep Found' by Laurence Clarkson. He claimed to have had a revelatory experience, and was one of the first prominent Muggletonian figures to not have known the founder of the movement personally.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, very smart. Light edge wear to the extremities, with edge of paste downs exposed. Light fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are partly uncut to the top edge but are bright and clean throughout, with the odd spot. Very Good. book.

Small 4to. 5.75 x 9.25 inches. [8] + 215 pp + [1]. Illustrated by head- and tail-piece vignettes. The Mystery of Faith has separate half-title but pagination and register continuous. In original, blue, sugar paper wrappers. Pages partly uncut and edges deckled. Wrappers partly eroded on spine, otherwise a fine crisp copy. Rare Deal printed Muggletonian Tract. We have previously sold The Harmony of the Three Commissions by Tomkinson, a James May printing of 1822. 'Tomkinson's most important work from the sect's perspective was 'A Practical Discourse upon the General Epistle by Jude.' This was probably the last book Tomkinson wrote and he did so at the request of William Hall, a Derbyshire Muggletonian. Although only a short work of 25 verses, the Epistle of Jude was of disproportionate significance to Muggletonians. Its darkly poetic language seemed to give scriptural support to important Muggletonian ideas.' The Muggletonians were a sect founded about 1651 by Lodowicke Muggleton and John Reeve. The belief of the sect rested on the personal inspiration of the founders, who claimed to be the 'two witnesses' of Rev. 3-6. Despite the informal nature of the sect (having no ministers nor meeting houses and non-proselytizing) it continued in Kent well into the nineteenth century. Believed extinct, it was by chance discovered that at least one Muggletonian was alive at Matfield, Kent, in the mid 1970s. Muggletonian theology was mostly circulated in manuscript form among believers. Thomas Tomkinson (1631-1710) was one of the early Muggletonians. Born at Ilam, near Dovedale, Staffordshire he converted after a revelatory experience in 1662, meeting Lodowicke Muggleton in London the same year. KENT THEOLOGY KENT THEOLOGY- 19TH CENTURY KENT.
