The extremely scarce first edition of the earliest version of the Declaration of the Rights of Man, a draft by Abbé Sieyès. This first edition of the very first version of Abbé Sieyès' founding text, printed already in July (after the 22nd) 1789 in Versailles by the royal printer Philippe Denis Pierres, contains a preparatory and preliminary text of the Constitution and a 32-article draft of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. The text was prepared between 16 and 19 July 1789 and presented twice to the Constitutional Committee of the National Assembly on the 20th and the 21st of the same month. This early version of the Declaration differs from the later editions published in a few weeks which comprise 37 and finally 42 articles (Paris, Baudouin), and in many respects it goes further than the final text of 17 articles, which was adopted by the National Constituent Assembly on the 26 of August 1789. A very rare edition, not cited by Tourneux. Only two copies were recorded by RBH. Shelfmark vignette of front cover. Edges dusted. Upper outer corner creased. Otherwise in fine condition. In somewhat later blank wrappers.
