8x11.5 cm. Used light tan envelope, torn open roughly at one end with letter presumably removed, with a map of all or part of 8 counties in Southwestern Kansas printed on the verso. The map also includes the area south of those counties in the panhandle of what is now Oklahoma, designated on this map as Public Land with no county lines shown. The map looks to be a promotion for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, as its lines, existing and proposed, through the town of Liberal, Kansas are delineated. the postmark from Liberal, Kansas is faded, with a second postmark on the verso from Raymond, Kansas dated March 2, 1895. One cent of postage has been printed, with an embossed bust of Benjamin Franklin, on the front, with an additional 1-cent blue stamp with a similar Franklin bust affixed. The envelope is addressed to Mrs. Alice B. Wells of Raymond, Kansas, with no return address. We have another example of this cover (our SKU m02414) which was addressed to the same person, but in a completely different hand.
