Hardcover. xvi, 249, [7] p. Bibliography. Index. In August 1949 a newspaper article caught the eye of William Peter Blatty, then an undergraduate. It described many of the bizarre and harrowing events upon which Blatty would later base his bestselling novel, "The Exorcist", and the film of the same name. 40 years later a priest's diary came to light. It had been hidden in a locked room in a St Louis mental hospital, and turned out to be a detailed account written by one of a team of Jesuits who had carried out a series of exorcisms of the boy at the centre of the case. The diary came into the hands of Thomas Allen, who researched its contents thoroughly, tracking down all surviving witnesses, including the victim. This book is the result of Allen's research. His other books include "Wargames". Life and career: Prosky, a Polish American, was born Robert Joseph Porzuczek (some sources indicate his name at birth was Robert Józef Porzuczek) in the Manayunk neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Helen and Joseph Porzuczek, a grocer and butcher. He was raised in a working-class neighborhood and studied at the American Theatre Wing, later graduating from Temple University. In addition to appearing in movies, Prosky appeared as a regular on the television shows Hill Street Blues and Veronica's Closet. He was considered for the role of Martin Crane in Frasier and later made a guest appearance in the show as a reclusive writer. He played Rebecca Howe's father on Cheers. He also played Coach Hayden Fox's mentor Jake "the Snake" Connolly on a two part 1991 episode of Coach. Prior to his film and television career, he appeared in numerous productions at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., most notably as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman. Prosky often performed at Arena Stage with over 100 stage credits to his name at that theatre alone. He also originated the role of Shelly Levene in David Mamet's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Glengarry Glen Ross. He was also a board member of the Cape May Stage in Cape May, New Jersey. Two of his sons, Andy and John Prosky, are also actors.
