Garrett Horder and with an engraved portrait of Whittier to frontispiece. John Greenleaf Whittier (1807- 1892) was an influential American Quaker poet and ardent advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. He is usually listed as one of the Fireside Poets. With the bookplate of one Colin Henry Mann to front pastedown. In a fine Oxford binding, with binder's stamp to rear of front pastedown. In a full crushed morocco binding. Externally, generally smart, some minor wear to extremities and raised bands of spine. Very light loss to leather at one vertice. Internally, firmly bound. bright and clean throughout with only the very occasional mark or spot. Very Good. book.

Spine discoloured to brown but still pleasing; boards clean and unworn. Ink owner's inscription to early page, otherwise internally clean. This is a beautiful Riviere binding. Small 8vo.
