Robertson's 1957 text established the gold-standard for pneumoencephalography by introducing controlled fractionation, a method utilizing small, precise gas injections to map ventricular systems through specific head positioning. While revolutionary for visualizing brain tumors and atrophy using hydrostatics, the technique was rendered obsolete by the advent of CT and MRI scans many years later. Itis derived from ventriculography, an earlier and more primitive onewhere the air is injected through holes drilled in the skull. Theprocedure was introduced in 1919 by the American neurosurgeon WalterDandy. Pneumoencephalography was performed extensively throughout thelate 20th century, but it was extremely painful and, as researcherswould later discover, very dangerous. The test was generally not welltolerated by patients. Headaches and severe vomiting were common sideeffects.
