Contact seller5-star sellerFirst Edition. Octavo. 76 Pages. Inscribed by the author to Robert von Berg. The author was a diplomat in Czechoslovakia who fled when the Nazi's took power. His deeply psychological novel deals with a diplomat who after fleeing to America become caught up in a New York world of power brokers who contrive and perhaps spy to crea…te a nightmare for its victim. Graham Greene was the first to recognize his importance. Orville Prescott says they are excellent stories with flashes of sardonic pessimism of his key figure, Jan Bares, whose suspicions are accompanied with guilt while at a party with a priest whose faith is shaken with a Czech lawyer obsessed with a frustrated love along with a cast of troubled yet "so-called successful people". He includes a letter to Von Berg as well as a two page list of his published works with reviews laid in. Bound in a pale gray-green cloth, spine lettering black, toning and light wear to spine ends, light scattered foxing to end sheets. AA very good copy in in worn and chipped dust jacket.
