Mr Sponges Sporting Tour lacking front and rear free endpapers with resultant cracking to hinges webbing visible, holding not quite yet disbound, previous sellotaped repair, ink inscription to halftitle. All volumes likebound in bright gilt lettered and illustrated pictorial bevellededge red cloth, featuring gilt embossed horse and rider on black embossed rural scene to both spine and uppers, with elaborate black scrolled framing and black dogs chasing gilt fox around uppers, blind embossed framing to rear. 4 volumes in great condition, gently rubbed to spines with very slight chipping to Romfords Hounds, all great shelf presence. Mr Sponge as the most popular tale is usually the most wellused as is the case here; sunned faded and creased to spine with 2 short frayed chipping tears to head, upper still good. Mr Sponge with Badbury Agnew in gilt to foot of spine, all others Subscription Edition, otherwise alike save Mr Sponge condition. Wonderfully illustrated by the great John Leech and also by Phiz, aka Dickens illustrator Hablot Knight Browne. A bargain set due to Mr Sponge.
