In Pious Memory is a short, slyly comic novel from 1967 that blends domestic satire, family psychology, and a lightly absurd mystery. It's one of her later works, written after decades of honing her trademark blend of elegance, irony, and emotional acuity. Mrs. Prelude survives a plane crash because she insists on always sitting in the tail, a habit born from something she once read about crash survivability. Her husband, Arthur Prelude—an eminent but rather self-important international banking expert—appears to have perished in the disaster. Mrs. Prelude identifies the remains and returns to England for the funeral. But soon she begins to doubt. Was the body really Arthur's? Could he still be alive? Her uncertainty sets the plot in motion, drawing in her three adult children and a cousin as they attempt to reconcile her conviction with what they believe to be the obvious truth. The family's reactions—ranging from denial to opportunism—become a vehicle for Sharp's dry, incisive humour. Ref HH 4.
