The Pilgrim's Way, a typically English road, far older than pilgrimage, has attracted several writers, but this book has a distinctive character. The author, who is well versed in the literature of his subject, occupied many weeks in a leisurely walk along the 120 miles of the road from Winchester to Canterbury, living almost exclusively in its atmosphere and spending one night only under a roof. In proseand verse he tells of the fascination of The Way: its ancient relics its traditions and history and the ever-varying scenery of its course. Ref XX5.
