Internally unmarked almost fine BUT.the covers appear to have several water marks to front cover ! very odd as endpapers & rest of book unmarked ! printing to front cover (title & cartoon) clear - the book is tight but 4" of spine bottom missing - small inscription to endpaper dated 1875. Leech studied with Cruikshank and worked for Punch Magazine for a greater part of his working life, but also illustrated books such as Ingoldsby Legends,Dicken's Christmas Carol, Mr.sponge's Sporting tour etc. This is the fourth volume of the five series. 1 volume. Landscape folio; 96 pages; each page contains between 4 and 6 cartoons, with 2 pages each containing one full-page cartoon; original blue pictorial boards, with more recent brown leather spine and corners: leather in very good condition; boards worn and a little chipped on edges, and generally grubby, with marks and stains; internally, the endpapers were replaced when the leather was added, there is some foxing to contents, mostly nearer the front and back, and some stains also, but otherwise the contents are good.

Boards faintly rubbed; spine a little creased, just beginning to fray at tips; front hinge cracked, with board starting, FFEP and half-title page detached, laid in. An excellent reading or breaker copy, (good solid entertainment), with nice, clean text block.

Condition: the boards are soiled with heavy rubbing to the edges; spines of all three books & the corners have been covered with red vinyl tape. Volume containing Series 3 has some smoke staining to edges; pp. 23/24 has had a portion of the page cut out & then taped back in with small loss of matter; several tape repairs throughout volume. Series 4 has had a part of pp. 63/64 cut out & then taped back in with some loss of matter; pp. 57-96 are loose. Series 5 has some smoke damage to edges. Overall, these volumes show wear and are a bit shaken; else in fair condition. Pages: Series 3, 96 pages; Series 4, 96 pages; Series 5, 94 pages.

First Series dated 1863, 96 pages, including a two page index. Second Series, dated 1862, 96 pages, no index. Volume's front endpapers is mostly gone, the back endpaper is creased and has a closed tear in it, minor chips to some pages; cover is scuffed, lower three inches of the spine is missing; scratch on the cover. Third Series is dated 1864, 96 pages including 2 of index; Fourth Series, dated 1864, 96 pages without index; endpapers are soiled and creased. Cover is scuffed, glass mark on the front cover. Hinges on both volumes are cracked. A very good set of hundreds of these b/w caricatures from Punch, with a minimum of four and up to alt least eight images per page.
