Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A thrilling travelogue of the year Dickens spent in Italy in the mid 1840s, published at a time when interest in his more marginal work is constantly increasing. In 1844, Charles Dickens took a break from novel writing to travel through Italy for almost a year and Pictures from Italy is an illuminating account of his experiences there. He presents the country like a magic-lantern show, as vivid images ceaselessly appear before his - and his readers' - eyes. Italy's most famous sights are all to be found here - St Peter's in Rome, Naples with Vesuvius smouldering in the background, the fairytale buildings and canals of Venice - but Dickens's chronicle is not simply that of a tourist. Avoiding preconceptions and stereotypes, he portrays a nation of great contrasts- between grandiose buildings and squalid poverty, and between past and present, as he observes everyday life beside ancient monuments. Combining thrilling travelogue with piercing social commentary, Pictures from Italy is a revealing depiction of an exciting and disquieting journey. Italy's famous sights are all to be found here - St Peter's in Rome, Naples with Vesuvius smouldering in the background and canals of Venice. In this book, the author portrays a nation of great contrasts: between grandiose buildings and squalid poverty, and between past and present, as he observes everyday life beside ancient monuments. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. pp: [viii][1]2-269 [3]. Original blue cloth boards with blind stamp decoration, two pages of adverts, pictorial title page. In 1844, Dickens took a respite from writing novels and for several months travelled through France and Italy with his family. About one-third of the book first appeared in the 'Daily News' from January to March, 1946. These were edited (some additions, some deletions) for the book. In the book, Dickens wrote of his encounters with Italy's colourful street life. He was a bit daring, travelling to the summit of Mt. Vesuvius on an icy night. And this writing captures the imagination. Dickens is particularly drawn to the costumes, cross-dressing, and sheer exuberance of the Roman carnival. This is a very good copy with moderate edge wear to the boards and soiling to the edge.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition (Second issue?). First Edition (Second issue?). Hardcover. Formerly owned by Oliver Sacks (unsigned). Vignette Illustrations on Wood by Samuel Palmer. Pictures from Italy is a travelogue by Charles Dickens, written in 1846. The book reveals the concerns of its author as he presents, according to Kate Flint, the country "like a chaotic magic-lantern show, fascinated both by the spectacle it offers, and by himself as spectator." From the library of Dr. Oliver Sacks, the renowned neurologist, author, and educator. He was, in his life, celebrated for his contributions to the understanding of the human brain and his ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to a broader audience. In doing so, he highlighted the profound impact of neurological disorders on human identity and experience. His library is a reflection of this remarkable polymath's questing mind. Complete loss to front board, moderate shelf wear/rubbing to extremities and bumped/chipped corners, spotting, spine worn, foxing throughout, discoloration/browning (plates show light toning and spotting), else tight, bright, and unmarred.
