Signed examples of the first paperback printing are extremely rare, and this copy is particularly distinctive because it bears the larger and more flowing style of signature Rowling adopted around the year 2000, when the series had already become a worldwide phenomenon. The book was signed in Edinburgh in 2000 during a special event following the publication of The Goblet of Fire. The original owner obtained a coveted "Golden Ticket" at the launch event at Waterstone's on George Street, which granted entry to a subsequent signing with Rowling at the Edinburgh Assembly Rooms. According to the owner, Rowling greeted each child warmly and even joked that signing a slim paperback copy of Philosopher's Stone was easier on her wrist than the newly released Goblet of Fire. A full written account from the original owner describing the event is available. The first paperback printing was issued simultaneously with the first hardback edition on 26 June 1997 in a print run of 5,150 copies, alongside only 500 hardbacks. The true first Bloomsbury issue can be identified by the following points: the Wendy Cooling quote on the front cover; 'Philosopher's' misspelled as 'Philospher's''and 'Witchcraft and Wizardry' reversed on the rear cover; number line 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1; the full name 'Joanne Rowling'; the missing space between 'Thomas Taylor1997' on the copyright page; and '1 wand' listed twice on page 53. A near fine copy. The covers remain bright with fresh colours. The delicate laminate layer - often damaged in surviving copies - is fully intact. The spine shows only a minimal reading crease and the spine ends remain sharp. Corners lightly bumped. The binding is excellent. Pages are clean and fresh with only very mild toning to the half-title and final page; the remaining pages show virtually none. A minute indentation to the upper corner of pages 110-118. No inscriptions or dog-eared pages. The book is housed in an elegant full-leather clamshell box featuring a fragment of the original cover illustration. The complete provenance of the book is known. The authenticity of the signature has been confirmed by Adam Houston of The Harry Potter Specialist, the world's sole specialist in J.K. Rowling's signature. A Letter of Authenticity is included.

The book was signed in October 2000 for a U.S.-based rare book dealer at a private event. It was subsequently purchased on 8 June 2001 by the previous owner, who carefully preserved the book for nearly twenty-five years before parting with it. The deluxe edition represents the first collector's edition issued in the Harry Potter series. According to Errington (p. 15), the title was published on 27 September 1999 in a limited edition of only 4,869 copies. Because of this restricted limitation, authentically signed copies of the deluxe first edition are exceedingly rare. An unread, fine copy. The red cloth binding is clean and unmarked, with two very small dents to the fore edge of the front board. The spine ends are very slightly pushed, and the corners remain sharp. The endpapers are clean and unmarked, and the pages show only the mild toning typically found in this edition. There is slight separation between the half-title and title page, while the binding itself remains excellent and sound. The blue ribbon marker is untouched and retains its original position. The gilt page edges are almost entirely free from marks. The book is accompanied by the original dealer's letter to the subsequent buyer, as well as a Letter of Authenticity (LoA) from Adam Houston (TheHarryPotterSpecialist), the world's sole expert on J.K. Rowling's signature. A very attractive copy of an exceptionally scarce signed collector's edition, presented in a custom-made half-leather clamshell box.

This is one of only fifteen copies given to the winner and the fourteen runner-ups of the anniversary competition in 2012. Entrants had to submit a letter explaining in no more than 50 words why the reader loved Harry Potter. It was encouraged to draw doodles and make their letters as elaborate as possible. This copy was won by Chloe Esslemont who was then sixteen years old and came as one of the runner-ups. Accompanied with the book is the letter with the original art as shown in the images. The book is housed in a bespoke full leather solander box. Provenance: auctioned at Hansons in December 2022. This is the rarest Harry Potter book in existence and with fifteen copies even eclipsing the 500 hardback first editions which were published back in 1997. We have only ever seen two copies that were sold on the market and this is one of them.

Subsequent dust jackets on later printings are more of a blue colour matching the blue on the book. Often third printing books are sold with later printing dust jackets as the slight difference in colour is the only thing that can tell them apart. This is a true third printing dust jacket. The book itself is in fine condition, a pristine copy except for a tiny crease at the base of the spine.
