Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Albert Einstein: Philosopher-Scientist (Library of Living Philosophers Series), edited by Paul Arthur Schilpp. Hardcover Second Edition, 4th Printing (printed 1957), in Good+ condition without a dust jacket. Blue cloth-covered boards feature a black title block near the head of the spine, complemented by gold lettering, including Einstein's signature embossed on the front cover. The covers remain in good shape, with a light 2-inch scratch near the bottom of the spine and a small frayed spot at the tail of the front edge, approximately 1.5 inches from the front corner. There is light rubbing to the corners and spine caps, and the spine print is slightly faded at the publisher's name. The binding exhibits a touch of flex, typical for thicker volumes of this kind, but the hinges are intact and unbroken. The front flyleaf shows minor abrasion. Interior pages are clean and unmarked, with light tanning consistent with the book's age (70+ years). This volume, part of the Library of Living Philosophers series, offers a comprehensive exploration of Albert Einstein's philosophical perspectives and scientific contributions. It features essays by Einstein himself, as well as critical analyses from leading scholars, addressing his influence on physics, epistemology, and the broader scientific community. The book provides an illuminating glimpse into Einstein's mind, reflecting on his thoughts about the nature of scientific inquiry and its ethical implications. The book will be carefully packaged for shipment to protect it from the elements. USPS electronic tracking number issued free of charge. Feel free to contact us for additional information or photographs of the book.

First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION of Albert Einstein: Philosopher Scientist, # 247 of ONLY 760 numbered copies, signed and dated by Albert Einstein. AN OUTSTANDING COPY IN ORIGINAL SLIPCASE. "The closest Einstein ever came to writing an autobiography. Indispensable" (Abraham Pais, "Subtle is the Lord," 1982, on the Autobiographical Notes in Philosopher-Scientist). The seventh volume in The Library of Living Philosophers series, Albert Einstein: Philosopher-Scientist (Evanston, IL: The Library Living Philosophers, 1949). is a tribute volume with deliberations by Einstein and some of the most important scientists of his era, examining the stunning scale and scope of the Einstein corpus. This important volume contains Einstein's autobiography, itself an noteworthy scientific contribution, specially written for the book, and includes a bibliography of his works plus twenty-five scientists' discussions of Einstein's work and achievements. Contributors include Bohr, Born, Reichenbach, Pauli, and a noteworthy essay by Godel in which he argues that Parmenides correctly explicated change as merely an illusion based upon our conceptual framework and our sensory perceptions. Einstein's response to twenty-five scientists' discussion of his work (including the Einstein-Bohr debates) concludes this cornerstone Einstein acquisition in his "Remarks Concerning the Essays Brought Together in this Co-Operative Volume." What were the famous Einstein-Bohr debates about -- and who "won" them? So many commentators, including the protagonists themselves, have remarked on this clash of the two titans, two determined seekers after truth. Particularly engrossing, Niels Bohr's contribution to this volume of Living Philosophers recalls the countless discussions and decades-long disagreements he and Einstein shared about the future of fundamental physics. "Bohr's account of his discussion with Einstein has been called 'one of the great scientific debates in the history of physics, comparable, perhaps, only to the Newton-Leibniz controversy of the early eighteenth century In both cases it was a clash of diametrically opposed philosophical views in both cases it was a clash between two of the greatest minds of their time'" (Jammer, 120). "It is generally agreed that Bohr's article of 1949, "Discussion with Einstein on Epistemological Problems in Physics" [pp. 199-241] is his finest exposé on complementarity" (Pais, Niels Bohr's Times, 428). As Paul Schilpp relishes in his Preface, "[Bohr's] recollections of conversations with Einstein on the epistemological aspects of physical science would never have come into being, were it not for the peculiar nature of this series." Octavo (approx. 6.75 x 9.75 x 1.75), original publisher's leatherette with gilt image of Einstein's signature on front board, bevelled edges, top edge gilt, pages uncut. Illustrated with 8 figures in text, photographic frontispiece after Yousuf Karsh, photographic and facsimile illustrations, limitation statement bearing Einstein's signature on the front free endpaper. Closed tear on two pages of the Index not affecting readability, else a very fine copy in publisher's original brown-gray slipcase. Lacks rarely found, fragile original glassine. Foundational, even indispensable to any collection of Einstein and modern physics. Best price on the market! Book #Bv2201. $13,500. Other landmarks of science by Newton, Bacon, and Galileo available. Please inquire. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Original brown cloth, top edge gilt, publisher's slipcase. Very fine, with the fragile slipcase in excellent condition. A superb copy. FIRST EDITION. One of 760 numbered copies signed and dated by Einstein. This important volume contains Einstein's autobiography, specially written for the book, a bibliography of his works, twenty-five scientists' discussions of Einstein's work and achievements, with Einstein's replies. Contributors of essays include Niels Bohr, Max Born, Wolfgang Pauli, and Kurt Godel. I. I. Rabi's review in Science hailed this as a "most important and significant volume. It is most difficult to get scientists to write simply and clearly about the fundamentals of their science and the leading philosophical ideas that guide them. In this book there is played out a great scientific drama of the last two decades. The book starts with an intellectual autobiography by Einstein himself. He satirically calls it his obituary. I know of no other to compare with it. Neither Newton nor Maxwell nor any of the other great giants of physics had his Schilpp [the editor] to catalyze such an effort. After reading Einstein's article one realizes the great loss this is to scientific culture" (Science, 21 April 1950). This is an especially fine signed copy of an important book in the Einstein canon. Signed by Author(s).

Includes essays by Bohr, Born, Reichenbach, Pauli, and the well-known essay by Godel in which he argues (based upon his solutions to the field equations of general relativity in 1949) that Parmenides was right in that change is an illusion based upon our conceptual framework and our sensory perceptions. An exceptional copy of this fascinating study of the scientist who so profoundly shaped the twentieth century.
