Soft cover. Condition: Fair. Colour paper map 54x65cm with circular map image @50cm in diameter, folding into the publisher's dark green flexible cloth boards with ornately illustrated title label 13x18cm. Paper yellowed with some spotting, 3 ink spots to the outer margins, and translucent archival tape repairs to folds at the back, and to the face along the 3 panel folds affixed to the case. Previous owner's details handwritten to the back 3 times. Covers good with short tears to spine ends. This cheaper 1 Shilling edition was also issued in a 2 Shilling cased, linen-backed edition. Undated c1880. The publisher's advert inside front lists it as No.2 in Philips' Series of 36 "Authentic Maps of the Principal Countries of the World, uniform in size, and embracing all the recent discoveries" (No.1 presented the World on Mercator's Projection, and No.3 the Western Hemisphere). Centred on the Indian Ocean, it shows Africa, Europe, Asia and Australasia. There is a fair amount of detail, including nautical distances from eg, Suez to Bombay, and Aden to Ceylon. The Rub al Khali is named "Desert from Mecca to Oman".
