First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. First Edition ( 'First published in the United States in 1982' ). Signed and inscribed by the artist on the front end paper (see photo). The covers of the book are in nice shape. There is some fairly inconspicuous amber foxing (now the having just taken the photos I will tell you confidently that my phone camera makes this foxing much more conspicuous-looking than the naked eye). The black spine is in very good condition. The gilt lettering there is nicely bright. The cover edges look very good, no rubbing, some small amber spots again that are inconspicuous as they seem to blend into the beige coloring. The cover corners are in very good shape, no rubbing. The page edges look very good, just a few speck-sized amber spots near the top of the middle edge. The inside covers and end papers are gray or grayish-green, perfectly clean and in excellent shape. Same with the title page. Another light gray colored page introduces the 'Chronology, Collections, Bibliography' at the end of the book, also introduces two sections, one titled War and Peace, and the other Earth and Water. All the other pages are semi-glossy. Some of the paintings are in color, some in black and white. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I didn't see any soiling or foxing. I didn't see any placeholder creases or turned-down corners. One page has a few very, very thin wrinkles or crinkles. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And the artist's signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. If you wish to see other photographs feel free to contact me. I have taken them, but am limited in how many I can post here. The dust jacket has some issues which is why it is rated only Fair. Nevertheless I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. You can see the jacket in the first few photos. There is foxing off the front top edge, also on the spine and alongside the spine on both the front and rear. There are two fairly small tears off the front top edge. There is a good deal of crinkling off the front bottom edge. There is a long tear coming up from the front bottom edge of the spine. It goes up about 45% of the way. There is also a tear of several inches coming up from the bottom edge of the front flap, along with some crinkling and a little tear off the front flap's bottom edge. The rest of the front flap is in very good shape, as is the rear flap. Because of the less than ideal condition of the jacket I have sharply discounted the price of this signed book. 'Gabor Peterdi was a Hungarian-American painter and printmaker who immigrated to the United States in 1939. He enlisted in the US Army and fought in Europe during World War II. He lived and worked primarily in New York and Connecticut, teaching at the Brooklyn Museum, Hunter College and Yale University in addition to working at his art. Peterdi's work is held by the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among other institutions.'. Inscribed by Illustrator(s).
