Album #1- Leather, oblong 4.7", 75 photos, 3.25 x 3.25", 128pp, covers well worn and becoming detached, contents have some soiling, the pages with photos are wrinkled, blank pages are not, some images light else good condition. Album #2- Leather, oblong 5.5 x 8", 14 photos 3.5 x 5.75", 24pp, covers are well worn and peeling, text block becoming detached else good to very good condition. Both albums are about half filled in, almost all are labeled. Ellen Beach Yaw was born near Buffalo, New York in the small town of Boston and moved to California at an early age. She gave concerts in the U.S. and Europe, performed in operas and Thomas Edison recorded her voice and said "Best high tones yet for the disc machine." Yaw was nicknamed "Lark Ellen" and was the only soprano of her era that could sing the D and above high D. Inside the first album is a note "Taken by T.U. 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 Bulls Eye. Los Angeles Cal. 1898." Photos with friends and family including her sister Anna Yaw. Lots of varied images of Larks Nest including her beloved dog, one photo of her home is labeled "Before the house was completed", posing by her grand piano etc. Other views: Mt. Lowe (including the 3,000,000 candle searchlight), Santa Monica, a San Diego trolley, S.S. Hermosa enroute to Catalina, Tiajuana(sic), Mexico (ruins of the Customs House, Mexican officer, boundary monument). Of interest is a visit to the two masted schooner J.C. Whalen, photos show "turtles weighing 1000 lbs", another one with turtles "after trip to South Sea Islands", another with it afloat and "loaded with seal skins- turtle shells- Pacific Ocean." Album #2 has a typed note from a W.H. Jackson to Mr. and Mrs. W.N. Colvin indicated that the photos are a reminder of their 1911-1912 trip to Los Angeles. Some of the views: group shot at Busch's Gardens, four photos of the Rose Carnival (Rose Parade), seagulls at Long Beach with the pier in the background, a man posing next to two strung-up sharks "Victory and the Victor Catalina Island, April 1st 1912". Of note are two photos: "Ellen Beach Yaw Residence Lark Ellen Cal." and next to it an unlabeled photo showing three women, a man and a baby seated on the steps of a house. The two older women look like Ellen Beach Yaw and her sister Anna Yaw Thorpe and the others could be Anna's husband (Benjamin F. Thorpe) and their daughter and grandchild. The recipients of the album, the Colvins, might have been old friends from the Buffalo area where these two albums were acquired. A total of two albums, sold as a lot only.…

23,500 people died of AIDS in the United States in the year 1989, and still many gathered to mourn, revel, and celebrate love. Forty-six 5" x 3 3/4" photographs document a Gay Pride parade and friends and lovers in 1989. Hundreds of people are pictured in procession smiling, laughing, and marching in the parade. Many are walking while others are riding motorcycles, many hold each other while others hold up banners. Banners read: FIGHT AIDS! WE NEED HEALTHCARE RESEARCH!, National Lesbian Conference, SMYAL (Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League), The Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps, Stonewall 1969-1989. One photograph features an AIDS memorial quilt. Two names are visible: Paul McLean and Stanley Lawrence Roberts. Other images frame personal photos of friends and lovers. In good overall condition.…
