Mails' The People Named Apache. This beautiful, hardcover quarto book was published by BDD Illustrated Books, in New York, in 1993. The book is signed with a creative dedication and an original sketch on the first free end paper. The book is presented in its original pictorial dust jacket and red-cloth covered boards with gilt titles stamped on the spine. Thomas E. Mails first published The People Named Apache in 1974. The book was revised and reissued by publisher BDD Illustrated Books in 1993. This update to Mails's 1974 bestselling classic contains 16 new color paintings by the author, whose drawings and paintings of Native American subjects have made his art a national treasure. Thomas E. Mails (1920-2001) was a painter, illustrator, and writer. Born in California, Mails studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts and Luther Theological Seminary. Mails is best known for painting and illustrating Native American culture and sketching in the Southwest. His books explore the culture, spirituality, and history of Native American tribes. He also extensively collected tribal Native American artifacts. Mails is listed in "Who was Who in American Art," "Master Index 1917-1993, Artists in Southwest Art," "Contemporary Western Artists,"and "Encyclopedia Artists American West." He authored 14 books on Native American tribes, including The Mystic Warriors of the Plains, The People Called Apache, Hotevilla, Hopi Shrine of the Covenant, Microcosm of the World, The Mystic Warriors of the Plains, and Dog Soldiers, Bear Men and Buffalo Women.
