Cloth. Condition: Good. None (illustrator). A French philosophical work from child prodigy and mathematician, Blaise Pascal, in the smart gilt-decorated cloth binding. A French collection of fragments written by the 17th-century philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascal. In the original cloth binding with lovely decorative gilt to the boards and spine. These were, in many ways, Pascal's life's work, as it represented his defense of the Christian religion, and from it stems the concept of "Pascal's wager". This is his philosophical argument that suggests individuals engage in a life-defining gamble regarding their belief in God.With a note on Pascal's life by his sister Gilberte Perier. From the library of Herbert of Clytha (i.e. Clytha Park situated in Wales). The owners of the estate, now a Grade I listed building, were the Jones family, later Herbert. It is unclear which Herbert this bookplate belongs to, however it is known that in 1885, Reginald Herbert (son of William Herbert) inherited the estate after his father's death. In the original cloth binding with decorative gilt. Externally, smart. With sunning to the spine and edges of the boards. Light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Bookplate of one Herbert of Clytha to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright, with scattered spotting. Good. book.
