Title page vignette, head-piece and decorated initial letter by Edward Bawden, coloured in green and pink. With 31 sheets of pattern papers printed at The Curwen Press,… 10 of which are produced from wood engravings. Each sheet is folded twice and uncut to the folded edge, as issued. Add to basketLithograph. Condition: Fine. Decorative Pattern Paper designed by Thomas Lowinsky for The Curwen Press, 1928. This example is from the Curwen Studio Archive and is printed on GREY Ingres Fabriano paper in MID-BROWN ink at Curwen Chilford Prints 1997 from Elizabeth and Robert Simon's collection (Robert Simon is the son of Herbert… Simon and nephew of Oliver Simon). The excellence of the printing in quality ink on fine paper imbues the full size sheet (20" x 25" approx) with the distinction for which the Curwen Press is celebrated. In his autobiography, Oliver Simon writes, "A group of artists became interested in drawing or engraving designs for a series of pattern papers which The Curwen Press initiated in 1923 for bookbinding covers and endpapers. The sheets, measuring 20" x 25", were printed lithographically". Writing about Curwen Press pattern papers Paul Nash states they are, "a humble part of the endless contribution to decoration which forms one of the most absorbing studies in the history of aesthetics". The sheet is in perfect condition. Thomas Lowinsky (illustrator).
