Jefferson County, bounded to the north by the Ohio River, was established by the Virginia General Assembly in June 1780, when it Kentucky into three counties: Fayette, Jefferson and Lincoln. Named for Thomas Jefferson, who was governor of Virginia at the time, it was one of Kentucky's nine original counties when it became a state in 1792.The present land grant issued to Andrew Johnston (1750-1826) comprised two hundred acres on Cartwright's Creek.
