In its rich-blue, patterned boards, this is a distinctly different binding from the pictorial cloth of the trade edition. Furthermore, this copy includes an original piece of Ray Johnson art, a 7" strip of collage (with thin striped paper running vertically against a deep blue), contained within an envelope fastened to the front pastedown. The book itself --an oblong quarto-- is clean and very presentable as well. This compendium of mail art by "New York's most famous unknown artist" (New York Times) was assembled by Dick Higgins, the founder of Something Else Press and Johnson's close friend, from his personal collection. The Paper Snake publishes all Johnson's "writings, rubbings, plays, things that I had mailed to [Higgins] or brought to him in cardboard boxes or shoved under his door, or left in his sink, or whatever, over a period of years" (Ray Johnson estate, online).
