Paperback. Condition: Good. Five decades of selected writings from the Irish Times by the beloved and best-selling author, filled with her hallmark humor, candor, and wisdom-a timeless gift to her legion of fans. Maeve Binchy once confessed: "As someone who fell off a chair not long ago trying to hear what they were saying at the next table in a restaurant, I suppose I am obsessively interested in what some might consider the trivia of other people's lives." She was an accidental journalist, yet from the beginning, her writings reflected the warmth, wit, and keen human interest that readers would come to love in her fiction. From the royal wedding to boring airplane companions, Samuel Beckett to Margaret Thatcher, "senior moments" to life as a waitress, Maeve's Times gives us wonderful insight into a changing Ireland as it celebrates the work of one of our best-loved writers in all its diversity-revealing her characteristic directness, laugh-out-loud humor, and unswerving gaze into the true heart of a matter. "Binchy's wry, self-effacing style reminds one of a Celtic Nora Ephron. . . . [She] throws a spotlight on strong, imperfect women confronting complicated challenges." --The Christian Science Monitor.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A victim of violent abuse at the hands of his stepfather, Lenny spent much of his teenage life in borstal as he began to follow a life of crime. However, it was his ability as a fighter that was to turn his life around. Lenny McLean inspired fear in many, but respect from all, as he became a bare-knuckle fighting legend. His fame became even greater in later life, appearing in Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels just as his autobiography was reaching the top of the bestsellers chart. Lenny's untimely death from cancer in 1998 marked the beginning of the end of the old Cockney way of life and interest in his story has only increased since his passing, inspiring documentaries as well as a feature film, My Name is Lenny. In these unedited conversations between Lenny and his 'book man' Peter Gerrard, featuring many anecdotes that did not appear in The Guv'nor, we get to see the man behind the public image. As he looks back on his life, these transcripts reveal Lenny's humour and charm as well as the volatility that made him one of the most notorious figures ever to emerge from the East End.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. In The Name of Growth and Development I have maintained a state of positive, institutional adjustment throughout my incarceration, and have successfully navigated the three-year setback given to me by the parole board at my initial hearing. I have dedicated my time in prison to the work of establishing rehabilitation. I have sought out, completed and participated in many activities, groups and programs that focus on, and target, the correction of criminal-addictive thinking and behaviors. I have directly targeted the most significant risk areas that influenced the criminality which led to my incarceration. In the beginning of my incarceration I asked myself, How did I get here? During the therapeutic process and responsibility of answering that question, I came to the understanding of how to stay out of prison. It was through a determined path of rehabilitation that has manifested in me a healthy process of transformation, stability and a life that is lawful. This will insure the success of my reintegration back into society, parole conditions and obedience of the laws of the land. I've grown into a state of mature masculinity. I have also held steady employment throughout my entire incarceration. I've been studious in the concept of work as therapy, education, conditioning and training myself for the routine and maintenance of the responsibility of civil living. I have also been accepted into the Inmate Worker program at BSH (Bridgewater State Hospital). It is a privilege given to individuals who meet the criteria of continuous, positive, institutional adjustment and lack of disciplinary issues. Every tool and skill that I have learned has become a part of my thinking and behavior today. These are skills which I practice in my day-to-day life, and will continue to practice once I am released.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. John Gilligan is no altar boy, by his own admission. One of Ireland's most infamous criminals and drug lords, and widely believed in the court of public opinion to have ordered the cold-blooded murder of crime reporter Veronica Guerin, he remains a defiant figure. In this remarkable book - the first of its kind - journalist Jason O'Toole distills hours of sensational face-to-face, no-holds-barred interviews with the feared criminal into a fast-paced and jaw-dropping account of the Irish gangland scene. And Gilligan doesn't mince his words. 'I didn't believe in God, but I know I'm going to hell.' Starting out as a petty thief in Dublin, Gilligan rose to the status of crime lord earning 10 million from drugs within his first two years. He mixed with 'the General' Martin Cahill, with Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch and with John Traynor. He was deeply involved with money laundering, miraculously survived an assassination attempt, and it is said he has millions of euro stashed away at a secret location, for future use. O'Toole demands answers from Gilligan for all the hard questions; some of his responses will make readers shiver. Gilligan knew that laying all his cards on the table could mean signing his own arrest warrant. or worse. But he has done it here. And with a cast of all the country's deadliest underworld figures, this expos is nothing short of explosive.…

Hardback. Condition: Fair. The myth of Charles Manson is not likely to survive the impact of his own words, Nuel Emmons writes in the introduction to Manson In His Own Words, the shocking true confessions that lay bare the life and mind of the cult leader and notorious criminal. His story provides an enormous amount of new information about his life and how it led to the Tate-LaBianca murders, and reminds us of the complexity of the human condition. Born in the middle of the Great Depression to an unmarried fifteen-year-old, Manson lived through a succession of changing homes and substitute parents, until his mother finally asked the state authorities to assume his care when he was twelve. Regimented and often brutalized in juvenile homes, Manson became immersed in a life of petty theft, pimping, jail terms, and court appearances that culminated in seven years of prison. Released in 1967, he suddenly found himself in the world of hippies and flower children, a world that not only accepted him, but even glorified his anti-establishment values. It was a combination that led, for reasons only Charles Manson can fully explain, to tragedy. Manson's story, distilled from seven years of interviews and examinations of his correspondence, provides sobering insight into the making of a criminal mind, and a fascinating picture of the last years of the sixties. No one who wants to understand that time, and the man who helped to bring it to a horrifying conclusion, can miss reading this book.…
