Guter Zustand. - Joseph Conrad, eigentlich Józef Teodor Nalecz Konrad Korzeniowski (* 3. Dezember 1857 in Berditschew, Gouvernement Kiew, Russisches Reich, heute Berdytschiw, Ukraine; 3. August 1924 in Bishopsbourne nahe Canterbury, England) war ein britischer Schriftsteller polnischer Herkunft. Leben: Conrad wurde als Sohn adeliger polnischer Eltern in Berditschew geboren, das damals zum russischen Zarenreich gehörte. Conrads Vater, Apollo Korzeniowski war als patriotischer Schriftsteller bekannt, darüber hinaus auch als Übersetzer von Shakespeare und Victor Hugo ins Polnische. Er regte seinen Sohn an, polnische und französische Literatur zu lesen. Aufgrund seiner polnisch-patriotischen Aktivitäten wurde der Vater 1861 verhaftet und neun Monate später nach Wologda in Nordrussland verbannt, wohin ihn Ehefrau Ewelina (geb. Bobrowska) und Sohn begleiteten. Joseph Conrads Mutter starb 1865. Der Vater wurde aus der Verbannung schließlich entlassen, wohnte noch kurze Zeit in Krakau, wo Joseph das Gymnasium besuchte, und starb 1869. Das Sorgerecht für das damals elfjährige Kind erhielt der Onkel Tadeusz Bobrowski. Er erlaubte dem sechzehnjährigen Jugendlichen, 1874 nach Marseille zu gehen, um Seemann zu werden. 1878 betrat er erstmals englischen Boden. 1886 erhielt Joseph Conrad die britische Staatsbürgerschaft. 1888 wurde er Kapitän der Otago"; es sollte seine einzige Position als Kapitän sein. Diese Seeerlebnisse, insbesondere im Kongo und auf den malaiischen Inseln bilden den Hintergrund seines Werkes. Conrad begann etwa 1890 seine Laufbahn als Schriftsteller. Als Kapitän eines Flussdampfers an den Stanley-Fällen (Kongo) hatte er schweres Fieber bekommen und musste in einem Kanu an Land gebracht werden. Das Kanu kenterte, aber Conrad wurde gerettet. Damals hatte er die Anfangskapitel seines ersten Romans bei sich. Das Fieber verließ ihn nie mehr, ein letzter Versuch 1893, auf See wieder zu gesunden, misslang. Bis zu seinem Tod schuf er, ohne große finanzielle Mittel, ein umfangreiches literarisches Werk. Conrad schrieb in englischer Sprache, die er erst mit 21 Jahren zu erlernen begonnen hatte. 1895 veröffentlichte er seinen ersten Roman Almayers Wahn. Lange Zeit war er auf Gönner angewiesen. Erst 1914 hatte er seinen literarischen Durchbruch mit Spiel des Zufalls. Seine Romane und Erzählungen zählen zu den berühmtesten Werken der britischen Literatur des ausgehenden 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Am 3. August 1924 starb Conrad an Herzversagen in seinem Haus Oswalds. Er liegt mit seiner Frau auf dem Canterbury Cemetery begraben. Auf seinem Grabstein der Spruch von Edmund Spenser, der auch Conrads vorletztem Roman Der Freibeuter vorangestellt ist: Sleep after toyle, port after stormie seas, Ease after warre, death after life, does greatly please."
