READ ON: For more information and interesting facts.# ##"An Outcast of the Islands" by Joseph Conrad, first published in 1896, is a compelling tale of betrayal, redemption, and cultural clash. The story centres around Peter Willems, a Dutchman who falls from grace due to corrupt activities. Banished from his comfortable life, Willems ends up in a remote settlement in the Malay Archipelago.## ## There, Willems finds himself entangled in complex relationships with the local inhabitants, particularly Aissa, a native woman, and Abdulla, an Arab trader. As Willems struggles to regain his lost status, he faces moral dilemmas and the consequences of his actions. Conrad's masterful storytelling delves into the themes of isolation, identity, and the destructive power of greed.## ## The Penguin Modern Classics edition of 1986 brings this classic novel to contemporary readers, focusing on the intricate interplay of human nature and the exotic setting of the East Indies. ##"An Outcast of the Islands" delves into several profound themes, masterfully woven into the narrative by Joseph Conrad. Here are some of the main themes explored in the book:## ##1. Isolation and Alienation: The protagonist, Peter Willems, experiences physical and emotional isolation as he is cast out from his community and struggles to find a place in the foreign land of the Malay Archipelago. This theme highlights the loneliness and disconnection arising from betrayal and exile.## ## 2. Betrayal and Redemption: Willems' actions lead to betrayal of himself and others. The novel examines the consequences of his betrayal and his attempts at redemption, raising questions about moral integrity and the possibility of forgiveness. ## 3. Cultural Clash: The interactions between the European characters and the native inhabitants of the Malay Archipelago reveal the complexities and tensions of cross-cultural encounters. The novel explores colonialism's impact, the misunderstandings arising from cultural differences, and the power dynamics at play.## ## 4. Greed and Corruption: Willems' downfall is driven mainly by his greed and corrupt behaviour. Conrad examines the destructive power of greed and how it can lead individuals to make unethical choices that ultimately harm themselves and others.## ## 5. Identity and Self-Discovery: Willems' journey is also self-discovery as he grapples with his sense of identity and his place in the world. The novel explores how individuals define themselves and the factors that shape their sense of self.## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY. Soft cover. Condition: Good. Condition: (see pics.) The book is in a good secondhand condition. 1984 printing with some wear to the cover and pages yellowing due to age. Synopsis: When Willems stepped off the straight and narrow path of his own peculiar honesty he thought it would be a short episode - a sentence in brackets, so to speak - in the flowing tale of his life. But Willems was wrong, for he was about to embark on a voyage of discovery and self-discovery that would change, if not destroy, the reset of his life. Marooned by his own people on the shore of a Malayan island, Willems is caught in the grip of his own vulnerability and corruption.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "An Outcast of the Islands" is my second novel in the absolute sense of the word; second in conception, second in execution, second as it were in its essence. There was no hesitation, half-formed plan, vague idea, or the vaguest reverie of anything else between it and "Almayer's Folly." The only doubt I suffered from, after the publication of "Almayer's Folly," was whether I should write another line for print. Those days, now grown so dim, had their poignant moments. Neither in my mind nor in my heart had I then given up the sea. In truth I was clinging to it desperately, all the more desperately because, against my will, I could not help feeling that there was something changed in my relation to it. "Almayer's Folly," had been finished and done with. The mood itself was gone. But it had left the memory of an experience that, both in thought and emotion was unconnected with the sea, and I suppose that part of my moral being which is rooted in consistency was badly shaken. I was a victim of contrary stresses which produced a state of immobility. I gave myself up to indolence. Since it was impossible for me to face both ways I had elected to face nothing. The discovery of new values in life is a very chaotic experience; there is a tremendous amount of jostling and confusion and a momentary feeling of darkness. I let my spirit float supine over that chaos. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. An Outcast of the Islands is the second novel by Joseph Conrad, published in 1896, inspired by Conrad's experience as mate of a steamer, the Vidar. The novel details the undoing of Peter Willems, a disreputable, immoral man who, on the run from a scandal in Makassar, finds refuge in a hidden native village, only to betray his benefactors over lust for the tribal chief's daughter. The story features Conrad's recurring character Tom Lingard, who also appears in Almayer's Folly (1895) and The Rescue (1920), in addition to sharing other characters with those novels. It is considered to be underrated as a work of literature for many. Conrad romanticizes the jungle environment and its inhabitants in a similar style to his "Heart of Darkness".
