Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover, 44 pages. Bound with approx. 50 blank pages after the sermon. Three quarters leather with marbled paper over boards a 19th century binding on early 18th century title. Faded gold lettering on the spine "Colman on Dudley - 1720." Lettering is printed on one line, English-style (bottom t…o top). The first original page is the title page, followed by 44 numbered pages. (Records of other copies seem to call for 2 unnumbered leaves at the end, which are absent here.) Handwritten on the side of the title page, "from Mr. Robert Molineux." And on the back of the title page, handwritten in a much earlier hand, "John F. Clough. His book, given to XXXX him by his Father 1787." There are a great many 'x's in the margins and neatly underlined passages. There was a Robert Molineux aboard the Endeavor with Captain Cook. Both the names Molineux and Clough appear among the 'heads of families' list for Boston residents in 1790. Research remains to be completed on this intriguing and ancient US imprint. Benjamin Colman was born in Boston in 1673, attended Harvard, and then went to England to study theology (after being captured by pirates shortly after leaving Boston). Upon his return to Boston, he became the pastor off the Brattle Street Society. He was elected to be the president of Harvard, but he declined, in order to remain at the church on Brattle Street. This sermon was delivered upon the death of the Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, Joseph Dudley. Dudley, though born in Massachusetts, served as a member of Parliament in England in 1701-1702. Though the Revolution was two generations away during his time as Governor, Dudley will likely be remembered as part of the long slow march towards Independence. Benjamin Franklin was born in 1706, during Dudley's 4th year as Governor.

Colman dedicates this early Boston sermon to Paul Dudley, Joseph's son, a Massachusetts judge and councilman.
