Condition: Near Fine. (12.5x19.5cm) Original'Rough' depicting New York gangsters and hustlers for the jacket on the UK first of David Alexander's New York-set thriller. Gouache on card, laid down on thick black paper, closely resembling but not quite identical to the final design as published by Hammond and Hammond, one of Sax's regular clients at this time. The image comes from a substantial collection of Sax's jacket designs. Kirkus reviews described the book thus: 'The big binge for Terry Rooke, when his girl slaps him down, some divorce espionage ends in murder, and the events which follow incriminate him further. Fuddled by liquor, he hides out in the Bowery, where he is picked up by Tommy Twotoes, an eccentric millionaire pigeon fancier, who clears Terry and cleans up the case. Raucous.'
