Publisher's original dark green pebble cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine, front and rear covers with borders ruled in blind, yellow clay-coated endpapers, lg 8vo. No ownership marks and no signs of use. Frontis-matter with slight foxing, light marginal foxing to the top edge of some text-pages; a very bright and clean copy in near fine condition.

This includes 'the substance' of Lubbock's 1867 British Association Dundee meeting address 'On the Primitive Condition of Man'. Less successful than his 'Prehistoric Times', this nevertheless augmented the evidence for human evolution and his view of prehistory. In this he devotes space to an extended discussion of religion (3 chapters) plus chapters on marriage, language and law. Apparently now scarce and 2nd ed. may be preferred academically for its additional material, coming in the same year as the 1st. Despite cover faults internal condition still warrants a qualified VG in my view and it remains an attractive copy.

Cloth. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Ex Folklore Society Library, with bookplate to front pastedown and stamp to title page and sticker to spine. Front hinge cracked, some light tanning and foxing, content clean and bright. Size: 8vo. Ex-Library.
