MILLER, Henry. Order and Chaos Chez Hans Reichel. Tucson, Arizona, USA: Loujon Press 1966. Introduction by Lawrence Durrell. Illustrated with an original photograph of Miller by Ina Paulandre tipped- in; a self-portrait of Reichel, and various illustration throughout the text. One of 26 copies lettered A - Z of the Cork Edition signed and dated by the author, this copy dated '6/15/67' and being lettered 'G', with each copy designated on slipcase 'The 26-copy A to Z cork edition: Autographed.' Designed, edited, printed & hand bound by Loujon Press, editors Louise and Jon Webb at 1009 East Elm, Tucson, Arizona. The various types - Van Dijck, Cochin Light and Goudy Thirty from Mackenzie and Harris, S.F., Libra Light from Amsterdam Continental Types, Lilith from Bauer Alphabets - were handset and distributed after each page was printed: the text papers - Gainsborough 80 lb. white and various handmade papers from Italy and Japan - were handfed to Loujon's 'ancient' 8 X 12 C & P Letterpress for printing: the text; preliminary stepped coloured papers, with stepped deckle edges coloured differently; textured gauzy leaves; and variously inserts laid in form a various and complicated collation. Loosely laid-in are three ephemeral items: a Large Loujon Press publication announcement featuring a photograph of Miller and his bicycle, size 51cm x 66cm; a Loujon Press award announcement, printed in blue ink, stating that the Cork Edition was the winner of three awards, the TDC [Type Director's Club] awards for typography, type direction, and design, size 22cm x 25; and another Loujon Press announcement with a hand-written message 'Autograph/ and lettered/ page at/ back/ of/ book.', size 22cm x 25cm. Book bound in stiff white cardboard, with illustration on cover which is covered in a sheet of perforated white gauze, in dj illustrated by Reichel painting 'homme dans La lune'. Fine copy, in cork covered and lettered slipcase. Superb example. Notes: The colophon states there were three editions: the standard edition, known as the 'Cork edition' of 1399 copies; the signed edition of 99 copies, known as the 'Signed Edition', the inscription edition of 26 lettered copies, signed and hand-lettered from A - Z. As it transpired there were at least seven editions consisting of the: The Crimson Oasis limited issue: 26 lettered copies signed, quarter leather binding; the Blue Oasis limited issue: 99 copies signed, quarter leather binding; the Cork issue: 1399 copies; the Orange Oasis limited issue: 3 copies; the Black Oasis limited issue: 11 copies lettered using letters to spell HENRY MILLER, quarter leather binding, bound in postcard from Miller to Jon Webb; the Green Oasis limited issue: 11 copies lettered using letters to spell HENRY MILLER, quarter leather binding; and this edition, the A - Z Cork Edition signed and dated by the author. This was the last edition issued, based on the ordinary prize winning Cork Edition. Though the book took them over a year to complete, once completed, it received top awards from the New York Type Directors Club for typography, design, and use of colour. In all, Loujon Press published three issues of the magazine The Outsider, and two books each by Charles Bukowski and Henry Miller. These publications received at least as much praise for their quality as physical artefacts as they did for the poems and prose that made up their editorial matter. It seems like a small catalogue, but the remarkable artistry, craftsmanship, and pioneering spirit have earned the press a much larger place in history. As art writer Nathan Martin commented, "Loujon operated during a particular moment in the history of artistic publishing in America ? and remains a distinctive and compelling entity at the intersection of fine-press publishing, counterculture literature, and the French Quarter from which it emerged.".
