More pronounced to free endpapers and pastedowns. Pencil markings to front free endpaper. Hinges are slightly cracked with exposed netting. Top textblock edge dyed gilt. Binding is slightly loose. Boards have mild edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces and bumping to corners. Gilt lettering is bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean. Visible wear marks to boards.

The novel centres on Walter Gregory, a young man emotionally exhausted by disappointment, illness, and spiritual drift. Retreating from urban life to a quieter rural setting, he encounters the Walton family, particularly Miss Walton, whose practical kindness and moral steadiness gradually "open" his hardened, defensive nature. Ornate cover, wear to cover, pages slightly tanned. Inscription to front end page, signature, libris page, minor foxing evident.
