Allí les espera Geoffroy Alien, un inglés que trabaja para la compañía comercial United Africa y que partió a Onitsha movido por sus fantasiosos deseos de recorrer Egipto y Sudán para buscar las huellas de Meroe, el «último reino del Niló». Mientras Maou cree que el reencuentro con su marido será el comienzo de una época feliz, Fintan desconfía de ese desconocido que es su padre y de lo que le aguarda en ese remoto continente.
