Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Landscape 215mm x 185mm 70pp. Faux crocodile skin boards with coloured pictorial only to the upper cover. The spine has lost the top 3/4" and bottom 1 1/2" exposing the webbing beneath with subsequent very slight 'looseness' but the binding is still very secure and otherwise in good order. Small Christmas gift sticker to front endpaper. No inscriptions. two of the five stories here are illustrated by Pauline Baynes who would go on to illustrate Lewis' Narnia books and some of Tolkien's titles. During WW2 the publisher, Powell Perry was stationed at the camouflage centre Farnham Castle where he would have rubbed shoulders with artists such as Julian Trevelyan and Roland Penrose and the magician Jasper Maskelyne. Perry's family owned a printing firm in Putney and he persuaded some of the artists at the Camouflage Centre to moonlight, producing a number of wartime children's titles, which are now very collectable.
