Patrick was an active boy before he was struck by the disease. His grandfather, Old Con gave him two pets, a puppy named Mr. McPherson and a bluejay with a shriveled leg who spent a lot of time sitting on Patrick's head and talked to him in Gaelic and urged him to keep at it and get somewhere.
