Opened only for Mr. Mendelsohn to sign. Personally hand signed, dated and located by Mr. Mendelsohn at first appearance for this new book at Harvard University. NOT inscribed to anyone. NOT a tip in. NOT a bookplate. Dust jacket hand covered in protective archival grade Mylar for many worry free years of reading/collecting! This may be the best translation of The Odyssey yet." Edith Hall, The Telegraph A magnificent feat of translation, hailed by classicists and poets alike as a momentous achievement : thrilling, rich and rhythmical, superb, mesmerizing, searingly faithful yet absolutely original. With this edition of Homer s Odyssey, the celebrated author, critic, and classicist Daniel Mendelsohn brings the great epic to vividly poetic new life. Widely known for his essays on classical literature and culture in The New Yorker and many other publications, Mendelsohn gives us a line-for-line rendering of The Odyssey that is both engrossing as poetry and true to its source. Rejecting the streamlining and modernizing approach of many recent translations, he artfully reproduces the epic s formal qualities meter, enjambment, alliteration, assonance and in so doing restores to Homer s masterwork its archaic grandeur. Mendelsohn s expansive six-beat line, far closer to the original than that of other recent translations, allows him to capture each of Homer s dense verses without sacrificing the amplitude and shadings of the original. The result is the richest, most ample, most precise, and most musical Odyssey in English, conveying the beauty of its poetry, the excitement of its hero s adventures, and the profundity of its insights. Supported by an extensive introduction and the fullest notes and commentary currently available, Daniel Mendelsohn s Odyssey is poised to become the authoritative version of this magnificent and enduringly influential masterpiece. Limited, numbered, and signed edition. This is an exceptional copy of the handsome Limited Editions Club publication of the celebrated translation of Homer's Odyssey by T. E. Lawrence "of Arabia". This edition is illustrated with wood engravings by Barry Moser, with a Preface by Lawrence's official biographer, Jeremy M. Wilson, and signed by both. The edition was produced in a numbered edition of 2,000 copies. This copy hand numbered "457" is a time capsule. It is not only still housed in the original glassine dust jacket and publisher's slipcase, but also still protected within the original Limited Editions Club shipping box, accompanied by the publisher's original promotional circular from July 1981.Condition is exceptionally fine, as would be expected. The volume would be flawless if not for the minor defect of light spotting, confined to the page edges a consequence of nearly half a century spent in the original shipping box. The binding and slipcase are pristine. The fragile glassine dust jacket is inevitably toned and a little brittle, but complete, with only a tiny closed tear at the spine head.In 1932, T. E. Lawrence published a translation of Homer's Odyssey. Lawrence's Odyssey (Illustrated by celebrated American typographer and type designer, Bruce Rogers) was considered a masterpiece, a strikingly beautiful book and a highly regarded translation. In 2014, Lawrence's official biographer, Jeremy Wilson, wrote "Lawrence's translation has been continuously in print for more than 80 years. By that yardstick it is second only to Seven Pillars of Wisdom among his literary achievements."The two works Lawrence's translation of Homer and the tale of his own personal First World War odyssey, Seven Pillars of Wisdom - can be considered closely linked by more than longstanding regard. "Although Lawrence translated the Odyssey long after he completed Seven Pillars, Homer's vision plays a major role in the character of Lawrence as we see him in his book, and influences the view that Lawrence as author takes of his characters. Homer was a lifelong study with Lawrence and he emerges as one of his finest translators." (Tabachnick, T. E. Lawrence, p.52) That Lawrence's Arabs are so acutely Homeric in their characteristics, codes, conduct, and fates - as was Lawrence himself during his sojourn in Arabia has been widely observed and defies coincidence.Of Lawrence's translation, it has been observed that ".when we set his translation against others, two qualities. give it a special distinction. The first is that he enjoys the story for its own sake and spares nothing to keep it clear and lively, to make the details illuminate and strengthen the whole effect. The second is that he sees the whole Homeric world with a clear vision as Homer himself saw it." (Introduction by Sir Maurice Bowra to the 1955 edition of Lawrence's Odyssey).

With the book label of David Levine, Sydney, on upper free endpaper versos. Originally from the library of British politician and diplomat Duff Cooper, whose bookplate, designed by Rex Whistler, is on the upper pastedowns (slightly damp stained in The Odyssey). Presented after his death by his widow, Lady Diana Cooper, to her close friend, the writer Patrick Leigh Fermor, inscribed 'Paddy from Duff's library with love from Diana - 1956' in The Iliad, with a similar inscription in The Odyssey. In each volume Patrick Leigh Fermor has pasted a manuscript note, dated 1999, below the gift inscription: 'To be gratefully handed on, and back to John Julius in the fullness of time with love from Paddy and Joan'. Paper-clipped to the upper free endpaper of each volume is Patrick Leigh Fermor's card, annotated by hand: 'Left to be collected by the Viscount Norwich.' The card in The Odyssey is further annotated 'I'm not yet as feeble as this inscription looks!'. John Julius Norwich was the son of Lady Diana Manners and Duff Cooper [later Viscount Norwich]. Loosely inserted in The Iliad is the publisher's printed slip of February 1931, explaining the best way to open the books and cut the pages. The Greek text is in the standard Oxford Classical Texts versions by David B. Munro (Iliad, in 1902) and Thomas W. Allen (Odyssey, in 1908). Pope's celebrated English translation of Homer first appeared in 1715.
